Nyamirambo Women Center was founded in 2008 as a self-help group and quickly grew to become a center that offers free education for women in the Nyamirambo neighborhood. Today women can join the center for classes in English, literacy, computer, sewing and handicrafts. Nyamirambo Women Center also organizes workshops on Gender Equality, Women’s rights and gender-based violence. In 2014 a community library was opened offering books in Kinyarwanda, French and English. In an effort to develop income-generating activities for the center but also for the women of the community, Nyamirambo Women Center developed a community-based tourism project that offers guided cultural walks in Nyamirambo and Umutima, a new line of household and children’s products.
The Nyamirambo women’s centre tour is one of the best ways to go beyond just visiting famous sites and eating in nice restaurants, to experience a bit of life in a real – and interesting- neighborhood in Rwanda. They will simply take you on a walking tour of a few blocks, and you will stop in at interesting places (e.g. a barber’s, a library, a sewing place, a place people make traditional food) and have chance to ask questions and try your hand at some activities. It’s also a non-profit and trains women in sewing, and has a top-quality gift shop.
